Another Haku Update

hakuI keep mentioning in other posts that I'm going to do another update on Haku, and then never seem to actually get around to posting about him.  It's mostly because I don't have a whole lot of news to report.  To be perfectly honest, the main reason I'm so hesitant to post really frequent updates is because although he is showing small signs of improvement, I'm still afraid that he could take a turn for the worst pretty quickly.  Basically I don't want to sound really optimistic that he's doing better one day, and then have to post that he passed away the next.  Just from that statement alone you probably get the idea that his prognosis is still very guarded at this time.

For anyone not following the Haku saga, basically my Leopard Gecko broke his leg in June and then shortly after he developed kidney failure.  Our best guess about what happened is still that his seemingly sudden kidney issues could have been triggered by the stress, and perhaps by one (or more) of the medications he was put on after he broke his leg.  His kidneys may have, unknown to us, already been impaired before all this happened, and then everything going on taxed his kidneys so much that he started showing symptoms.  I guess we may never know for sure.

What I do know is that when I posted my last update about Haku, back on July 18th, I was pretty sure that my next post about him would be to tell you all that he had passed away.  But here we are, over 2 weeks later, and Haku is still with us.  We're still pretty much in "wait and see" mode.  Since I updated last, Haku's kidney function has improved.  He's not 100% by any means, and I feel like things are very touch and go with him right now.  But hey, the news could be worse right?

By the way, Haku actually bit me this morning when I was taking care of him.  I think it was the happiest I've ever been to get bitten by one of my pets.  A few short weeks ago he was so lethargic I don't think he would have been able to muster the energy to bite me even if I had stuck my finger in his mouth.

So there you have it, the Haku update I've been promising.  In a nut shell, he's showing signs of improvement but isn't out of the woods yet.  I'll keep everyone, more or less, up to date on what's going on.  Thanks for reading, and to everyone who sent me emails or messages on Facebook asking about Haku!
