I had to make an emergency run to the grocery store the other day, mostly to stock up on greens for the hoppers. Among other things, I bought them some cilantro. Right about now you're probably thinking "so what?", and wondering what about my recent grocery greens run made it blog worthy.
Both my fiance and I utterly despise cilantro!
This may sound strange, but we're not the only people who feel this way. Genetic studies done by 23andMe scientists have shown that cilantro hatred is genes deep. I'm not going to delve into genetics in this post, but basically your genes can determine whether you enjoy or despise cilantro.
It seems that many people who hate cilantro do so with a passion! There is even a I Hate Cilantro website, were fellow haters can hang out and discus just how much they hate the herb, or, you know, write haikus about it. Most people who dislike cilantro describe it as tasting soapy, or moldy/mildewy. I'm going to be perfectly honest here - I've never actually tasted cilantro before. The reason being that, to me, the smell of it alone makes me feel sick to my stomach.
Have you tried cilantro before? Do you like it? For the people who can stomach it, cilantro is full of antioxidants and contains vitamins A, K, and C. It is thought to have many health benefits, such as lowering bad cholesterol, and improving symptoms of insomnia. It is also good for eye health, bone health, boosting the immune system, and heavy metal detox.
Plus, bunnies like it. Cilantro is good for rabbits, in moderation, for many of the same reasons why it's good for humans. Both Barnaby and Poppet seem to really enjoy eating it, despite the fact that I can barely carry it to their room without gagging!
I don't usually buy my bunners cilantro, because I just hate it too much. But they lucked out last week. Most of the greens at the store I went to were really overpriced, but cilantro was on sale. I've been giving it to them a little at a time (I only gave Poppet that big pile of it momentarily while I was taking pictures), and have to say that I'm very happy that it's almost gone!
Are there any foods that you really don't like dealing with, that you buy anyway to keep your pets happy?
