Remembering BerryMelon

I don't know how many people who don't know me in person will remember BerryMelon (aka Berry).   She passed away on June 15th, 2012, so just over 5 years ago now.  I adopted her as an adult back in 2009, around a year before I started this site.

For those who never knew her while she was alive, Berry was an amazing broken black and white Holland lop rabbit.  She was around 4 lbs, and was incredibly sweet.  Berry was the firsts female rabbit I ever owned.

In the past I tended to opt for male pets, rabbits especially, because I had always read that females tended to be a bit on the cranky side.  Berry totally taught me otherwise, she was such a sweetheart.  She loved her people, Kitsune, and especially her two rabbit brothers Barnaby and Ziggy (RIP).  She was a bit on the shy side with people she didn't know, but loved when her bunny brothers or I groomed her.

Although Berry was a Holland lop, she had ear control.  It meant that she could pretty much hold her ears however she wanted them.  Sometimes they would both be flopped over, sometimes she'd hold them up, and most of the time she seemed to like having one up and one down.

In 2010 Berry had her first stroke.  I woke up one morning and found her on the floor, unable to so much as lift her own head up.  I thought for sure that we would loose her, but instead she showed us just how strong a bunny can be!  It took time, and a lot of work, but slowly Berry began to improve.  She lifted her head on her own again, then slowly relearned how to walk.  She always had a bit of a gimp after that, but looking at her you would never have known anything was wrong.  She resumed life as a very happy bunny.

Her happiness lasted two years.  Unfortunately in 2012 she had another stroke and this time wasn't so lucky.  She passed away at home, we didn't have time to get her to the vets.  Barnaby and I were both by her side showering her with love as she left this world.

Berry taught me so much while she was with us.  I still think of her often, mostly of the happy memories we made with her.  Last week was the 5 year anniversary of her passing.  It might seem cheesy to post about a pet who has been gone so long now, but I wanted to share her with my new readers who probably wouldn't have known about her at all.  Berry was and always will be a beloved member of our pack.
