Koopa and Zamboni, aka Koop and Zam, are Cherry Head Red Footed Tortoises who joined our pack on November 14th, 2017.
They are from a breeder local to us who was looking for a good home with reptile experience for these two because they had some health issues. When we got them Koopa had a respiratory infection and Zamboni had shell rot.
Luckily, with the proper set up and meds, we were able to get their medical issues under control quickly. Today you wouldn't ever be able to tell that they were sickly babies. They are sweet and personable little tortoises, who love to eat and (slowly) explore their environment.
The torts are too young to sex for sure but our current guess is that Zam is a female and Koopa is a male. They currently live together in an indoor enclosure. We're planning on building them a much larger indoor enclosure as well as an outdoor one once they get a big larger.
For anyone who's curious, the torts are easy to tell apart. Koopa is currently a bit smaller than Zam with a more yellow colored shell. Zamboni's shell is darker and has more black than yellow. Zamboni is generally a bit more outgoing while Koopa is shy, however the longer we have him the friendlier he's getting!
Red footed tortoises can live 50+ years in captivity so we're looking forward to spending many, many years with Koopa and Zam! Make sure to follow our blog to watch them grow with us.
