WordlessImageI was recently tagged by the lovely Anne from Whiskers to Paws to take part in the 8 photos of happiness tag.  Started on Ariel's Little Corner of the Internet, the idea is to share 8 pictures that represent happiness.  Hopefully the pictures I selected make you smile, I know I had a lot of fun looking through all my old photos. ...continue reading "8 Photos of Happiness"

WIt doesn't take much common sense to know that all pets should always have fresh, clean water available.  Giving your pet water each day is probably one of the easiest things you do for your pet.  After all, unlike selecting what foods to feed them, what vet to take them too, what supplements are right for them, and other important health/lifestyle related decisions, you really don't have to put much thought into the water you give them each day.

But you should be monitoring how much water your pet drinks.   It's not hard to do, and sudden changes in the amounts of water your pet consumes can be an indication that something is wrong.  In addition, there are health issues that can be caused from not drinking enough (dehydration, kidney issues, organ failure), and even from over drinking (electrolyte imbalances, hyponatremia, bloat). ...continue reading "How Much Water Should Your Pet Drink?"

HI feel a little bit like I've been dwelling over Haku since he got sick and passed away.  I know I posted about him quite a bit while he was sick, and at least a few times since his death.  Despite the fact that he's been gone for almost 7 months now, here I am posting about him again!

When I got to H in the A to Z challenge I just had to write about Haku.  I wish I were writing about him in different circumstances, that he was still with us, healthy, and enjoying the nice spring weather along with his mate, Aurora, and daughter, Miyuki.  Alas that isn't the case, but in a small way he is back with us again.  I finally got around to ordering and setting up his memorial frame.  ...continue reading "Haku’s Memorial"

AI'm starting off this year's April A-Z blogging challenge by writing about Aurora, one of my Leopard geckos.  Aurora is currently 6 years old.  She'll be 7 in September of this year.  She is a Tremper albino het. diablo blanco, for any of you who might be into genetics.  I got Aurora from a gecko breeder back in 2009.  I originally got her as a partner for Haku, my male Leopard gecko who has since passed on.  Haku and Aurora had just one baby that hatched successfully, Miyuki (who we kept).  The rest of Aurora's eggs turned out to be infertile.  Not wanting to continue putting her through the stress of laying eggs just to have them all turn out to be infertile, I decided to retire her from breeding and just keep her as a pet.  Aurora lives in a 20 gallon aquarium, right next to her daughter Miyuki, in our "pet room".

cb3Happy 2015!  I hope everyone had a fun and safe New Year's Eve, and is having an amazing start to 2015 so far!  Since we had a pretty busy Christmas, we decided to have a nice quiet New Year's Eve, and just celebrated at home.  The gecko girls both got nice clean tanks, complete with the additions of their new hides that they got for Christmas.  I spent some extra time cleaning Barnaby and Poppet's room, and the bunnies and Kitsune each got an extra special dinner to celebrate the new year.  Not too exciting, but it was nice to be able to just relax at home. ...continue reading "2014: Our Year In Review"

1901204_10203160231748235_1181328650_nGeneral Information:

Leopard geckos, (Eublepharis macularius), are small, nocturnal, desert dwelling lizards that originated from the Middle East.   Adults are generally between 7 to 10 inches in length, and weigh between 50 to 100 grams.  Leopard geckos (leos) have an average lifespan of between 10 and 15 years, though some have been known to live well into their 20's.  Their ease of care, readiness to breed in captivity, and placid nature has led them to become one of the most commonly kept pet reptiles. ...continue reading "Basic Leopard Gecko Care Sheet"

I'm posting with a very heavy heart today.  Haku, my male snow blizzard het. diablo blanco leopard gecko, passed away yesterday morning.  For anyone who hasn't been following his story, he started going downhill back in June.  I don't really want to get into the details of his condition in this post, but if you search my blog or just scroll through the posts I've made since June (2014) you can read about his struggles.  I'd rather focus on his life than his death now, but I will say that he did pass peacefully.  He was an awesome little lizard and will be missed.  ...continue reading "In Loving Memory of Haku (7/17/2008 – 9/24/2014)"

hakuI keep mentioning in other posts that I'm going to do another update on Haku, and then never seem to actually get around to posting about him.  It's mostly because I don't have a whole lot of news to report.  To be perfectly honest, the main reason I'm so hesitant to post really frequent updates is because although he is showing small signs of improvement, I'm still afraid that he could take a turn for the worst pretty quickly.  Basically I don't want to sound really optimistic that he's doing better one day, and then have to post that he passed away the next.  Just from that statement alone you probably get the idea that his prognosis is still very guarded at this time.  ...continue reading "Another Haku Update"

1549363_10203148815182828_527419641_nIt's sad, but true, that exotic pets need rescuing too!  While the focus of many rescues is on more common pets, such as cats and dogs, unfortunately countless exotic pets find themselves in need of assistance each year as well.

In honor of the struggles we've been dealing with with Haku (he's still with us by the way, I'll post another update soon), we decided to promote a reptile rescue for the month of August.

That means that 10% of all August proceeds, including add revenue and sales from my two books Cooking with Canines and Barnaby's Balloon, will be donated to the Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. ...continue reading "August Featured Rescue – Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary"
